PFM Application Form Help Guide

Find out tips on how to get into PFM with our Application Form Help Guide

Application Form Help Guide

With the recent numbers of people applying to PFM, the Board has decided to build a page that will demonstrate to new applicants the expected level of application to get into the game.  Please, before you fill out the application form, read this help guide.  It will greatly help your chances of getting a place in our league.  This help guide will go from the top of the form to the bottom, giving hints and examples of what is expected.

General Points to Consider
*  Don't be disheartened if you don't get a place first time around.  You can always re-apply if you want to.  Just make sure to do your best each time.

*  Use as much detail as possible.  The more points you have about your manager for the PFM Board to consider, the better.

*  While your spelling, punctuation and grammar don't have to be perfect to play PFM, there are qualities expected.  Be sure to use a spelling and grammar checker before submitting your application.

*  PFM is all about enjoyment, so make sure your character is one with plenty of scope for interesting storylines.

*  If you have MSN Messenger and wish to get in contact with the PFM Board, you are welcome to add contact pfm_cory_skilton@hotmail.com to your contact list.  Cory is a member of the PFM Board and is generally available to help if needed.  If you have any major queries, or don't have MSN Messenger, feel free to e-mail the PFM Board at pmf_board@hotmail.com.

Your Name
Obviously, this is the place to enter your real name.  Do not enter your character name.

Contact Address
This is your e-mail address.  We will use it to contact you regarding PFM.  Please note, if you are accepted into PFM, a good week will see anywhere between 20-40 e-mails arriving in your inbox, so be wary of this when entering your e-mail address.

Password
Not a vitally important part of your application - if you are accepted, you will be re-sent your password, or given a chance to change it before you begin playing.  As always though, make sure it's kept private, and it's something that you can remember readily.

Age
Choose your appropriate age group.  While this has no major bearing on your application, it is important for our records to see which age group most readily applies to PFM.

ICQ
Enter your ICQ number here.  If you don't have ICQ, you can specify whether you have any other instant message software, such as AOL or MSN Messenger.  Please bear in mind that most managers and board members in PFM use MSN Messenger.

Manager's Name
This is where the main part of your application begins.  Enter your character's name here.  Generally, most managers enter a creative yet serious name, such as Alain Borl.  PFM will not accept applicants who use professional's name, like Alex Ferguson or Kevin Keegan, or fantasy names like Sharp Shooter or heavymetalwarrior666.  Make sure to enter a name that you are prepared to use in PFM, as you won't be given the chance to change it if accepted into PFM.

Example - Fred Jones

Manager's Personality
This is the chance to tell us what your manager is like.  His moods, general temper, overall behaviour around other people.  Is your manager a kind-hearted soul with a kind word for all his players in public, or is he prepared to vent his opinions when he sees fit?  Be sure to include things like temperament and any other characteristics that make your manager 'tick'.

Example - Fred Jones is a kind manager who is prepared to give everyone at his club a chance.  Although he rarely raises his voice in anger, he firmly puts his point across to his players and staff.  Fred is a well-respected manager both in England and abroad.  Generally Fred has a good rapport with the press and fans, readily giving interviews and signing autographs.  Although he has a calm and cool exterior, below this boils a fierce determination to win games and trophies for his club, and he always tries his best for any club that he is manager of.
Feedback - This example gives a good account of what manager Fred Jones is like.  It gives the PFM Board a quick view at what Fred is like, and what sort of manager he would be in PFM.

Manager's Appearance
Here is the opportunity to give your manager a face and appearance.  Is he a balding, fat, middle-aged man who can always be seen in the club's training kit?  Or is he a smart, sophisticated, well-groomed manager regularly seen wearing suit-and-tie?  Be sure to include things like age, height, body frame, clothes, etc., anything to create a visual in the minds of the PFM Board.

Example - Fred is a towering presence, being a former goalkeeper, measuring in at 6'4".  Although he looks gangly and awkward, he walks steadily and quickly, seemingly always with a purpose.  On the training pitch he wears the club's training kit, getting involved with training exercises and showing his players what he wants done.  At official functions, press conferences or match days though, Fred always wears a dark suit, as he values the look of professionalism.  Fred also wears glasses, which are gold-rimmed and suit him well.

Feedback - As you read this sample, you gain a visual of what Fred Jones would look like.  He immediately appears to be a well-dressed man.  If you couple this with his personality description, you already have a fair idea of how Fred Jones would look and act in different situations.

Manager's History
Manager's History is the opportunity to give your manager a background.  Was he a struggler, who came up through the non-leagues?  Maybe he was a phenomenal talent before being hacked down in his prime by injury.  Whatever your character is, be sure to include things like: birthplace, where he grew up, history in football (playing), history in football (coaching/management), and anything else of important historical note.
Example - Fred was born June 30 1959 in London, England.  He grew up in the northern part of town as a Tottenham Hotspur supporter, regularly attending their home games and watching his heroes play.  He was also a talented goalkeeper, playing for several youth clubs until he was snapped up by Spurs as a 15-year-old in 1974.  He developed in their youth system, and was offered professional terms in 1977.  Following injuries to key first-team players, Fred got his chance at the big time, and put in some great performances to cement his place as the number 1 for the side.  In 1983, he made his senior England debut, and was also transferred to Italian club Juventus for a record fee of £550,000.  He was plagued by injuries in Italy though, and when he injured his knee while in pre-season training in 1989, was forced to quit playing.  He quickly got his coaching badges, as he still loved the sport, and became youth goalkeeping coach at Spurs in 1991....

Feedback - While this isn't Fred Jones' complete history, you have a good idea of where he has come from and what he's done in his footballing career.  When you add this to his personality and appearance, you can now imagine that Fred is almost a real life professional, who has had good and bad times, and is now looking for a new challenge.

Other Information
A useful place to enter any additional information on your character.  Does he have a coach or assistant that joins him at all his clubs?  Does he have a family?  Does he have interests outside of football?  If so, describe them here.  Remember, the sky's the limit.

Example - Fred is a certified accountant, having held down a job as an accountant while playing for Spurs, and is a silent partner with a large accounting firm in northern London.  His best friend and closest colleague is Joey Keen, a 41-year-old who played with Fred in the Spurs youth system before eventually spending almost 20 years with small club Rushden & Diamonds.  Joey has joined Fred at all his clubs since Fred began management in 1993.  Fred is a happily married man of 22 years to high school sweetheart Margaret, and the two have three children - twin sons Alex and Craig (19), and teenage daughter Melissa (13).
Feedback - From this information we now know that Fred has a loyal assistant manager, and has a stable family life.  He also has other interests outside of football, which give his character a more rounded look.

Sample Roleplay
Arguably the most important part of your application.  This is where you show the PFM Board that you deserve a place in the game.  Remember, we are not looking for your best roleplay here, just something that you feel you could regularly produce if needed.  For more help with roleplaying, visit the Sample Roleplays section of this website.

Example -

FRED JONES CONFIRMED AS NEW MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER

Former Everton and Tottenham Hotspur manager Fred Jones was today confirmed as Manchester United's replacement for the retired Sir Alex Ferguson.  Jones was unveiled at a press conference earlier today, and took the chance to answer some questions from the media and say a few things of his own.

Jones:  (smiling)  Obviously I am delighted to be appointed as manager of this great club, I am very much looking forward to working with the great players in the squad.  I know it will be a daunting task to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, but I am confident that I can do a good job for the club and its supporters.

Press:  Do you have any transfers planned as yet?

Jones:  Not yet, I haven't had a chance to look at the squad yet.  However, I do feel that from just watching the team play recently, there are some areas that could be strengthened.  The Manchester United Board has kindly offered a good amount of money for me to spend, and I may look to use some of it in the future.

Press:  Can Manchester United win the League this season, with yourself as new manager?  What are your expectations for this year?

Jones:  (smiling again)  I have high hopes of a good year.  We have a strong squad and, yes, we can win the League this season.  I fully expect that the players will try their hardest for me and the club throughout the season, and for us to definitely be in the hunt for the number one spot at the end of the campaign...

Feedback - As you can see, this is not a long roleplay, but it gives the PFM Board enough evidence to suggest that the applicant would be a steady player of the game.  It also gives them a chance to see how the earlier parts of the application were used in creating a scene for the sample roleplay.
