Player's Say - November/December 2002
View old player comments from: October 2002
Wednesday 4th December
David Seaman (Arsenal) unworried by furore Source: ESPN Soccernet "I know that there's been a war of words in the press between the gaffer (Johan Gudjonsson) and Martin (Keown, former Arsenal player), but I am not keen to get involved. All I can do is put my head down, train hard and do my best as captain of Arsenal Football Club. If that means I never play for England again, that is up to (Matt) Hansen (England manager), but I am certainly keen to show everyone that I am still the number one at this club."
Mark Viduka (Everton) wants big-name friendlies Source: Viduka's weekly article for Melbourne Knights Official Website "Now that the reserves are over, we need to keep in shape. It's fine for the European players here, they get their international tournament to go to, and most of the Everton first team is off there. But there is a few of us left who need to keep match fit. I would certainly not protest if the gaffer (Aussie Jones) organised some big friendly games against teams from Italy or Germany or even Scotland...we need to keep match sharp, and I am just desperate to be back in Everton colours again".
Michael Owen (Liverpool) annoyed over international absence Source: Player's personal website "I am really gutted to be missing the opener against Belgium, I've just got a niggle in my knee that I can't shake. I was just training with Liverpool the day before the England get-together and it didn't feel right. Scans show something is wrong, but I am told it's nothing major and I should be fine for the game with Cyprus the week after next. I am looking very forward to that".
Eidur Gudjohnsen (Arsenal) criticises
Blackburn and Chelsea...again "I don't know what their (Blackburn and Chelsea) problem is, half the comments they claim I've made I've never said. I have seen the quotes that I apparently said, and I categorically deny ever saying them. I was in love with Chelsea, I loved the fans and the players, and it hurt to see the management trying to get rid of me so badly. And it's funny that Blackburn got involved too, neither Jacques Gautier nor Pat McEvoy bothered to ask me if I made those comments, which I didn't. I hope that they feel embarrassed right now".
Elena Marcelino (Watford) keen to stake claim Source: Player's personal website "I am not happy to be transfer listed here (at Watford), but I can understand the decision. My form last season was poor after I joined from Newcastle, and I let myself go over the off-season. But now I am returning to fitness, and I think I can impress the management here. As far as I know there are no clubs interested in me, and I'm not interested in leaving, so if I can show Watford that I deserve to stay and they want me, I would love to stay".
Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City) delighted by senior call Source: Official Manchester City website "Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to be in the England side, especially considering last year I didn't make the City squad as much as I'd like. But I busted a gut over the off-season to impress Matt (Hansen, manager at City and England), and I managed to get a string of good games in the reserves. I don't expect to be used in these qualifiers, but being with the squad will be an amazing experience".
Harry Kewell (Leeds) says Rooney should play Source: ESPN Soccernet "England have a great chance to blood one of their best youngsters. If you look at some of today's players, and even older players, many began their international careers at 17. Guys like Michael Owen and Pele were starring in World Cup action at that age. I reckon that England should use Wayne Rooney in place of Michael Owen, it's the first game and you could say England have a fairly easy group, it'd be different if they were playing Italy or Spain or someone, but Belgium is hardly a major opponent".

Eidur Gudjohnsen (Chelsea) criticises
Blackburn "I thought everything was signed and sealed with Blackburn, but then their boss (Pat McEvoy) tells me I would not be happy with the club. He had already offered me squad rotation football, which I am happy with, but then all of a sudden said no. I am really unhappy that I can't get away from Chelsea, I would have loved to have tried to play for Blackburn".

Hugo Viana (Newcastle) rubbishes Chelsea

Carlton Cole (Chelsea) admits he's "feeling the pressure" Source: Player's Personal Website "I have to admit that lately I have been feeling the pressure here. We have so many great international strikers at the club, like Jimmy (Floyd Hasselbaink) and Eidur (Gudjohnsen), and the gaffer has really been building me up. I don't want to disappoint anybody, I am trying my hardest but sometimes things just don't work. I missed the open net against Everton which would have given us a draw, and that hurt me a lot, but I'll be trying my best when I get the chance to play again".
Roy Makaay (Coventry) happy to be a Sky Blue Source: Dutch football site (translated from Dutch) "Everyone keeps asking me, 'why have you gone to Coventry?' They think that the club is beneath me after I was a star player for Deportivo La Coruna, but I have to disagree. The club is trying now to become a very big one in England, and the gaffer (James Brady) is very ambitious too. We won't be in Division 3 for long, and I'm happy to stay here and try to score some goals for the Sky Blues".
Keith Southern (Everton) criticises his manager Source: Unofficial club website "I am getting very sick of turning up to training for Everton. I love the club, God knows I do, but our manager Aussie Jones isn't giving us (the club's young players) a chance to impress him. We are seen now as one of the biggest clubs in England, but how good can it possibly be when the guys who've come up through the ranks can't even get into the first team? If he doesn't start using us soon, I reckon he'll have a whole generation of young players dedicated to Everton lost". |
