** Bradford City manager Buck
Hysen is walking around a packed room with his wife. The room is
completely full with Buck's friends and family. He is shaking hands with
everyone and thanking them for being there.
The 250 strong crowd had been invited by Buck's family to help celebrate his 50th birthday. At the beginning of the evening Buck had been completely unaware of the surprise that greeted him as he walked into the room with his wife and two children. He had looked almost embarrassed as he scanned the room and saw many of his family, Friends, Players and other celebrities from the SAS league. It is now 9:28pm, The party is in full swing and at least 60 of the guests are dancing on the dance floor which is situated right in the centre of the room. Small tables with four chairs to each table surround the dance floor and most of the other guests are seated here, While the rest, mainly Bradford City players, Other SAS players and SAS managers and board members stand at the bar chatting and drinking and making the most of a night out away from the pressures of SAS soccer action. Buck's wife has been gone for several minutes but now emerges from the large kitchen door at the end of the room, She and the two Hysen children are wheeling in a massive cake. The cake simply reads 'Happy 50th Buck', As the music dims to a silence in the background, the guests start to clap and cheer. Buck, who seems thoroughly surprised by everything that has gone on walks slowly over to his wife and two children and kisses them. Bradford chairman Roy Race walks over and is given a microphone by Buck's Wife. As a hush falls over the guests, Roy Race begins to speak. " Well as your...( pauses )..erm boss I suppose, I've been selected as the person to say a few words. I would like to say that it's been great working with you these past couple of weeks and I'm sure everyone here agrees that you've had a great career so far in football and we hope that that continues for a few more years yet, You have been a terrific husband and father to your wife and children and this night is dedicated to you from all your friends and family and lets hope we have more nights like this when Bradford City win there first trophy in SAS. ( A few laughs are heard around the room ).... A very Happy Birthday Buck." ** A huge round of applause bellows out from around the room ** Roy Race speaks again " Err, Before you go Buck there is just one more thing, There is a man here who has a little something he would like to say to you also" ** As Roy Race and some of the other guests make a small gap, A man walks through to the sheer surprise of Buck Hysen. The man is Michael Aspel ** Aspel: Buck, You've had one big surprised tonight and I'm sorry to gatecrash this little party you have here but I'm here to give you another.......tonight,....Buck Hysen,.....This is Your Life." ** Aspel hands Buck the famous red book ** ** Buck Hysen puts his hands over his mouth in disbelief as yet again the guests below out applause and laughter ** **** The scene now opens at the This is Your Life studio, The stage is set up with the double doors facing the audience and either side of the doors, facing each other, are the seats in which the guests will sit. Already seated are the Bradford City players, Some of Buck's friends and most of the SAS managers. As the This is Your Life music plays, Buck Hysen walks through the double doors to the applause of the crowd, He shakes hands with Michael Aspel who is standing with the red book and sits on the end chair **** Aspel: Well Buck we have a few people you know here with us already,......Sitting over there are your Bradford City players, Chairman Roy Race and the Bradford City board members.......Behind them are some of the managers from various clubs in SAS, ....Sitting behind you is your Brother Hank, Brother Butch and your sister Butchalina who is with her husband John and two children Maisy and Mooey. Buck Hysen,... you live in Bradford in Yorkshire and are manager of SAS league side Bradford City. You have been married for 28 years to Trish and have two children, Shannon 25 and Lauren 23 and here are your family.....Trish, Shannon and Lauren. ** The crowd and guest applaud as Trish, Shannon and Lauren walk through the sliding double doors to give Buck a hug and kiss. Trish sits beside Buck and Shannon and Lauren sit in the next two chairs ** Aspel: You were born on February the 10th 1950 at Princess Margerets Hospital in Swindon to your Mother Issabel Hysen and Father Gus Hysen. You were the last of four children to be born. Until the age of four you lived at William street on the outskirts of the town centre in a small three bed roomed house. You had to share a room with your two brothers Hank and Butch. Your father, who was a postman, worked long hours to earn enough money to pay the bills while your mother stayed at home to look after you and your brothers and sister. Times were very hard in those days Hank ( Aspel gestures to Hank ) Hank: Yeah, Very hard, Dad would work 10 and 12 hour shifts most days just to earn enough money for us to live on, I used to help him on Saturdays so we could see more of him over the weekend. The pay wasn't that good but dad always said it was a job. Aspel: When you were four your dad earned promotion at the post office, Your mum started working part time at the local corner shop and Hank had also started work, Things were looking up and with the extra wages the family were earning you moved to a bigger four bed roomed house, To Eldene on the outskirts of Swindon. At five you went to your first school, Clifton Infants school, You liked it straight away because they played a lot of football. It was while playing football at school that you met your first real friend. ** A voice booms out from the speakers ** " Yes, And I was always better than you even back then " Aspel: He is still your friend today...........Bill Thug ** Bill Thug walks through the doors and gives Buck a big hug.......He stays standing next to Aspel ** Aspel: Were you really a better player than Buck? Thug: Always, ....Buck wasn't very good at school although he tried his hardest, But he couldn't seem to grasp the rules of football ( laughs ) We used to spend hours teaching him tricks and skills but it took a while to sink in. ( Winks at Buck ) Now look at him. ** Thug shakes hands with Buck and sits down ** Aspel: Well, Its true that you did take a while to settle to the game of football and used to practice for two or three hours every night after school but at the age of 10 you were playing for your school and enjoying it. You then went to Commonweal school and now played football more than ever, You were constantly in trouble for not doing your homework and your headmaster said that you were to stop playing altogether. ** Again a voice booms from the speakers ** "And do you remember what you said to me." Aspel: Your old headmaster from Commonweal.........Roy Baxendale ** Roy walks through the double doors and shakes Buck by the hand ** Aspel: Did he always love football roy? Roy: Oh yes, He would rather be playing football than anything else. I told him he had to concentrate more on his lessons and forget football, To which Buck replied, ' Maths and English will do me no good when I'm scoring for Swindon in the FA cup final '. I was a bit too shocked to tell him off. Aspel: Thank you Roy Aspel: At 16 you were spotted playing for your school by Swindon Town scout Ian Woods, Woods immediately thought you had talent and asked you to have a trial at the County Ground. After a week at the club Swindon decided that you had what it took to be given a chance so they signed you on schoolboy forms. ( looks at Buck ) That must have been a dream come true? Buck: Yes it certainly was, I supported Swindon and went to watch them every week, I used to go down to the ground and watch the players train, When I was given the chance to sign with Swindon I thought about it for about 3 seconds. I couldn't believe I would be training and then maybe one day playing with my heroes. Aspel: You worked hard for two years and were rewarded by a contract just after your 18th birthday but a change of manager meant that you were not even considered for the first team despite playing very well. You spent all that year playing in the reserves and the only high point during that time was meeting Trish. Luck soon came your way though as another manager came in and immediately put you in the team, You started well under the new manager and had soon established yourself as a first team regular. Your room mate in them early Swindon days was a man nearing the end of his Swindon career who helped you with advice. ** A voice from the speakers sounds out ** And you never paid a blind bit of notice to anything I told you. Aspel: Your Swindon room mate........Don Rogers. ** Don walks through the doors and is greeted with a huge smile from Buck, He gives him a hug then stands next to Aspel ** Aspel: Not the best student in the world then? Don: That's an understatement Michael. When we were playing away from home I would sit there for hours giving him advice and giving him the lowdown on the team we were playing, When I turned around to see why he was so quiet he would be snoring his head off. ( laughs from the audience ) Aspel: But did he listen on the pitch Don: No, ...He was even worse,......When we played Leeds in the FA cup final in 1970 It was one each with about a minute to go and we had a free kick on the edge of the area, I told Buck to pretend he was going to shoot and run over the ball, All he kept saying was that he wanted to score in a cup final and I thought the excitement would get to him and make him miss, I said that myself and Gary Smart had a plan worked out so he reluctantly agreed to let me take it. He ran forward slowly, i ran behind him, expecting him to jump over the ball but instead as many of you know, He struck it straight into the top corner for one of the best ever FA cup final goals. ( audience and guests laugh again ) Aspel: Thank you.......Don Rogers Aspel: You spent ten long years at Swindon and enjoyed some good times, You were part of the squad that went from the forth division to the second. During this time you married Trish at St Marks church in Swindon and two years later your first son Hank was born. At the age of 28 while playing in a league match against local rivals Bristol City a bad tackle left you with a double fracture in your left leg. You had three operations on your leg and battled hard to play football again but it became obvious that your leg wouldn't be able to take the strain of professional football. After three years of hard work you decided that your playing days were over. This must have been one of the hardest periods of your life? Buck: Yes, Extremely hard, I loved football and everything to do with it, I couldn't think of doing anything except that. I had some offers outside of the game but I just wasn't interested. Aspel: Indeed, You took a break from football for two years and spent time traveling with your family. Then, At the age of 33 you were offered the chance to get back into football when Torquay offered you a job in management. You jumped at the chance and enjoyed your new role in football. You took to management well and in your first season Torquay missed out on promotion by only two points. You spent six good years at Torquay and took them into the second division and to two FA cup quarter finals. You enjoyed it there and were very settled, Despite being approached by several bigger clubs you wanted to stay loyal to Torquay, Then, At the age of 39 your hometown club Swindon offered you the chance to go back as manager. It was an offer you couldn't refuse so you went back to where your career began. You immediately changed the fortunes of the ailing club and within a year you had turned them from relegation favourites to promotion hopefuls, You twice took Swindon to the play offs but the top division eluded you. You were enjoying life in Wiltshire and you and your assistant manager were becoming a great partnership. ** Voice from the speakers ** ' And we are still great mates today ' Aspel: Your long time friend and now physio at Bradford.......Johnny Jinkin ** Jinkin walks in and gives Buck a big hug and stands next to Aspel ** Aspel: Is he a good friend Johnny? Jinkin: Yeah....We've been mates for over twenty years now and Buck's been a good friend to me, He's helped me when I've been in trouble or down and I'd like to think I've done the same for him ( Buck nods ) He's stuck with me recently and I thank him for that. Aspel: Thank you Johnny. Aspel: Although in 1995 you had a bad season in the league you took Swindon on an amazing cup run that lead to a place in the FA cup semi finals. You were only narrowly beaten by Newcastle United, 3-2. The manager of Newcastle that day was a man you now know very well and has become a good friend, He is now manager of SAS side Tottenham Hotspurs and you have recently started an alliance with him and Coventry City manager Joe Carfton and here they are now.....Brian Thompson and Joe Carfton. ** Both men walk in and shake hands with Buck, They laugh as they are talking to each other. They stand next to Aspel ** Aspel: Brian, How did Buck react to that semi final defeat? Brian: He was a sore loser I can tell you ( laughs ) I tried to shake his hand after the final whistle but he had already gone down the tunnel to the dressing room. He came into our dressing room shortly after the match and congratulated our players and bought in a big bottle of champagne. He told me he had never been so upset over losing a match but he knew we had played brilliantly to beat them. I felt a bit sorry for him because Swindon had played so well so in the bar afterwards I offered to buy him a drink, I wont repeat what he said to me as this is a family show ( Brian and the audience laugh ). No he wasn't that bad, He phoned me later on that week and invited me out for a drink. Aspel: And Joe, What's this alliance all about then? Joe: Well we've been good friends this season so we feel that an alliance will help us progress in SAS. We all feel that we have something to give to this alliance and it will only help our three clubs. Aspel: Thank you to you both. Aspel: Well despite that sad semi final loss you bounced back and a year later you had taken Swindon to the play off finals at Wembley, Unfortunately you lost 1-0 to Sunderland but you had created a team that would surely reach the top division in a matter of time. You were still happy at Swindon but at the end of 1999 you were given the chance of a lifetime to join the biggest league in the world and manage SAS side Bradford City. Was that the hardest decision you've had to make? Buck: One of the hardest yes, I felt very happy at Swindon and I wanted to stay loyal to them, I had made up my mind to stay but people on the street were telling me that I had to go for it and that they wouldn't think any less of me, So I decided that perhaps it was time to move on. Aspel: You straight away started changing Bradford's fortunes and surprised everyone by bringing in two quality internationals in Attillio Lombardo and Angelo Di Livio. You have taken them to the top of the SAS cup group 1 and have now won your first game in the league, The chairman and the fans are 100% behind you. You've made many friends already including Brian Thompson, Joe Carfton, Jeet Padaruth and the man behind SAS, ScreamKing. It seems you have a good future ahead of you in SAS and it is surely only a matter of time before you bring success to Bradford City..... ....Buck Hysen........This is Your Life. ( Buck stands up and Aspel hands him the Red book ) ** The closing music starts as the audience clap, Buck Hysen and his family walk to the edge of the stage as his other family and friends form a semi circle behind him ** ** Scene fades to end **
